So tonight I an going to try to finish the f’in Escape brake repair. What started as a simple rotor/pad issue has grown into something much uglier. Its more that I’ve ever attempted so any advice would be great.

in the picture above is the retaining clip for the E-brake which, due to rusting will no longer hold in its hole. In order to get that part off, which I believe is called the brake dust shroud or some crap like that, I need to take the hub off. That is the part that worries me the most. What do you guys think? is it easy?

Ease is up in the air - you aren’t going to know until you try or at least research. A CV axle+ nut setup like that often (usually) has ball bearings in the hub, which can be an okay thing or can be catastrophically awful. If you’re lucky the hub comes off as a unit after about four bolts. If you’re not, the ball bearing hub has to come apart itself with a puller, after a four-hour fight with the CV nut.

First: you have to take the hub off to get at the brake dust shield? Holy shit.

Second: Taking the hub off as a process is easy...that shouldn’t reassure you, though. The torque on that big hub nut you see there is usually at least 150 lb-ft, and you’re either going to need an impact wrench or a 1/2” drive with the biggest cheater bar imaginable...and really trustworthy jackstands. Impact wrench is the way to go, and from what I understand it really needs to be an air tool.

Haven’t worked on an escape, but its not difficult on the disc brakes i’ve worked on before. just have a clean place to put the parts and keep the small parts organized.

on my e36 I have the same problem. What people do is just cut the shroud in half and install the new one in two pieces. As long as there are enough fasteners on each half, you should be alright.

More than likely what you’re going to have to do is remove the axle nut, pull the hub off with a puller, remove the backing plate (you can probably remove the whole plate with all the parking brake mech still in place, save for the cable) - then swap everything over to a solid backing plate, or maybe just find a good one at a parts yard and swap it in whole with all the parking brake mech? I personally can’t believe something so new is that rusted already, I’d imagine finding a good used one wouldn’t be that hard.

OR maybe a dealer will fix it because of the rust recall:

I already ordered the plate from ford. It was a pain to find. The thing is really in rough shape for an 06. I was surprised at the amount of rust. Welcome to New England.

is the nut resusable or will it need to be replaced? I’ve heard some have a plastic locker on them that can;t be reused

Looking up “ford escape” and “rust” brings back some pretty grim images. These things apparently rust like a 1970s Pinto. I would imagine “brake disintegration” after only 9 years would warrant a recall too, but ford.

You might ask a dealer if there are any recalls anyway, because you never know. Toyota replaced rusted suspension arms on my 1982 Tercel around 2004 because there was a recall - I never thought to even think about it because the car was so old. But they still did it.

A quick RockAuto search seems to indicate that you’re looking at three pieces: the hub itself, a bearing assembly, and a retaining ring. The bearings are all contained in a race, so you won’t have any sort of PITA like little balls falling out.

3 pieces to replace? or three peices to remove to replace the shroud?

The hub assemblies for sale come with an axle nut, so that’s evidence that it may...that being said, any detailed photos of the nuts on RockAuto don’t seem to appear to have plastic lockers.

I mean, if your wheel bearing is fine you shouldn’t need to replace either it or the hub. I don’t know if the axle nut has a locker, and the little retaining ring may be fine but it’s tiny and I break those little pieces on my car all the time.

well the hub seems fine so I didn;t order 1, just the shroud in the back

since you bought the parts off Ford you should y ask them about the nut. No guarantee they’ll help, but hopefully they’re nice, might even let you see the shop manual on how to replace the part if you ask
